St.Andrew Church

The clock on the complex of ex-monastery of the Bernardine Order next to St.Andrew Church belfry shows the time ahead for 5 minutes of other clocks in the Lviv. When Lviv was in encirclement of the Bohdan Khmelnutskij army, the monk from the belfry of the Bernardine monastery saw the Kmelnitskij’s kozaks sooner for 5 minutes than a soldier from Town Hall Tower. After that incident the special privilege had been granted to the Bernardine monastery – the clock on their belfry shows the time ahead for 5 minutes of other clocks in the Lviv. This tradition keeps until now. The most interesting building of the old Lviv is the complex of ex-monastery of the Bernardine Order. This Order appeared in the same time with the Templar Order.

The most monks were ex-soldiers; it was the reason of their aggressive character. The complex had been built in 1600-1630 by architects Paul of Rome and Ambrosij Prykhyl’nyj. The belfry with a clock had been built by Andrij Bemer.
